What do I think - love it, love it, love it! Apart from your undoubted technical skill the composition is wonderfully original. You are definatley one of my favourites Sophie, congrats on all the recent accolades and onwards and upwards.
As good as finished but without a title yet, so for now, it is called ‘The Blue Dress' oil on linen, 50x60cm This painting was inspired by a condition called POTS , something I have lived with all of my adult life. POTS is a fairly unknown condition of the autonomic nervous system which makes you dizzy and faint, at best, and wheelchair/bed bound at worst. I wanted to express the feeling of dizziness and loneliness in a painting. For this painting I looked at medieval art, like Fra Angelico’s architecture and drapery, Vermeer’s use of blue, and of light, I picked pieces from Blenheim Palace and my imagination to put this all together in a vision of Alice in Wonderland-styled confusion and dizziness. For more on POTS, check out the patient charity STARS Edit spring 2012: I did some more work on it, here is the final image:
Happy 2015!! I love looking ahead so I have been looking at any great exhibitions coming up. Not the ones with my work in it - necessarily - but the big ones at the major public galleries. Lots of newspapers do this but just like everybody else I never agree with their selection! In 2014 there were some real blockbuster exhibitions. I don’t always get to go because of time restraints (I have a young family so sometimes Rembrandt has to make way for Paddington Bear) but I really enjoyed the ‘Wedding Dresses’ exhibition at the V&A last year, as well as the major Veronese exhibition at the National Gallery. Of course the BP Portrait Award 2014 was a big one for me personally. I really wanted to see the Rembrandt exhibition but I simply ran out of time and had to skip it. I am no big exhibition-goer, but I am a wannabe. In no particular order I hope to see at least some of these promising exhibitions in 2015. Which ones would you recommend and have I missed? Sargent.
