    Your studio does indeed look very clean. It is the colours as well as the pack of debris. I wish I could manage to keep my area without splatters of paint and spilt turpentine.

    ah, but you have a different style of painting! I paint very neat and tidy, I don’t even get it on my clothes or fingers (well, usually not) and I need to be a bit tidy as there’s kids running around! So my studio is full of clutter most of the time, as it is basically too small to fit in all my stuff. I’ve put loads of old paintings away, sorted out paperwork....and voila!

The Pearl Necklace

This is the last painting in the series ‘The Four Ages of Woman’ which shows a woman in four stages of her life, each painted as they are, as truthfully and honestly as I could. Each are wearing an authentic piece of early 17th century lace, shaped in a collar often seen in early 17th century fashion. The lace and the modern women are connected in these paintings. The Pearl Necklace, oil on linen, 50x60cm The Pearl Necklace, oil, 50x60cm. Detail Italian Bobbin lace, around 1620. Used for ‘The Pearl Necklace’ painting I carefully and loosely attached the lace to a simply-made collar. The lace was so delicate I had to be extra careful and after the photo shoot remove the lace and put it away in its storage box, only taking it out once in a while when I was painting. The lace is a bobbin lace, often seen in Dutch and English portraits in the early 17th century and imitates (more expensive) needle lace. The Blue Dress

As good as finished but without a title yet, so for now, it is called ‘The Blue Dress' oil on linen, 50x60cm This painting was inspired by a condition called POTS , something I have lived with all of my adult life. POTS is a fairly unknown condition of the autonomic nervous system which makes you dizzy and faint, at best, and wheelchair/bed bound at worst. I wanted to express the feeling of dizziness and loneliness in a painting. For this painting I looked at medieval art, like Fra Angelico’s architecture and drapery, Vermeer’s use of blue, and of light, I picked pieces from Blenheim Palace and my imagination to put this all together in a vision of Alice in Wonderland-styled confusion and dizziness. Royal Society of Portrait Painters

Royal Society of Portrait Painters annual Exhibition Portraits 2012 The private view of the RP exhibition was, as always apparently, packed. Through the crowds I managed to have a good look around and found myself amazed at the evocative paintings on display. I had so many favourites I could not show them all. There was an impressive collection of portraits of the Queen, to celebrate her jubilee, and of course the celebs were not lacking in presence either. But a hugely touching portrait by David Cobley of his mother stole the show, as did three paintings by RP member Michael Taylor. Antony Williams won the Ondaatje Prize ('best in show’) and his work is absolutely awesome. His portraits in egg-tempera are stern but endlessly subtle, technically amazing and timeless. My painting had a fantastic spot on the wall of the north gallery, surrounded by RP members’ work. I was honoured it was hanging so well.
