I've been exploring a new medium..charcoal pencils. The textures you can create with these are really endless. Still lots to learn but am getting the hang of it. I've called this one Eurydice, she has some tiny snakes in the lace pattern..... Eurydice, Charcoal & Pastel, 60x45cm
I have made giclee prints available of my painting The Blue Dress. They are available to buy on the link below. http://fineartamerica.com/featured/the-blue-dress-sophie-ploeg.html Shipping to anywhere in the world, including the UK of course. You can choose whichever size you want and choose from a variety of archival papers. Greeting cards are an option too! At the top of the page you can choose your currency from a drop-down menu. Please note: ALL profits made from the sale of these prints will go to charity. The charities I have chosen are STARS and PoTS UK , two patient organisations who do a lot for people with dysautonomonia. If I get enough orders for a standard size and you are willing to wait I can make a bulk order and thereby save everyone postage cost. Feel free to ask any questions you might have and I hope you will buy and support these vital charities.
I have been sharing my progress pictures on this next painting and thought I wanted to show it here too. This is currently on the easel. Underpainting stage. Just burnt umber (=brown) paint on white canvas (oil primed which is the base I prefer to work on). It takes a while at this stage as I want to get the 'feel' right, the line of the neck is vital. The sepia look is quite attractive, perhaps I will do a completely monochromatic piece one day! Colour blocking in: This stage goes quicker. I put in some base colours and make sure that the skin underneath the lace is approximately the right colour. Now I get the small brushes out, a synthetic or sable size 1 brush and start hatching the skin and begin the lace pattern. I'll end up getting lost in all those curly black lines! To be continued!!
My latest painting is in the last stages...perhaps a tiny adjustment here or there, but it is pretty much finished. It is not a commissioned piece but a painting that I wanted to paint for a portrait competition. My inspiration were the deep brown eyes of my young model, I wanted to continue the brown theme with a hint of mystery. Roses Oil on canvas, 50x40cm Feel free to leave a comment below.
The Veil, oil on linen, 70x60cm A very big work for my standards, but such fun to do. Got the frame ready, just need it to sit for a bit and to dry... This one piece of lace is providing me with quite a few paintings! More to come!
I am happy to announce my painting ‘Yellow Scarf’ has won the Winsor & Newton Choice Award at the Society of Women Artists 150th Exhibition at The Mall Galleries in London ! Thank you SWA! Yellow Scarf, oil on linen, 40x50cm www.society-women-artists.org.uk www.mallgalleries.org.uk
The old lace I got from a friend was too good to resist. As soon as I had it in the house I started playing with it. It is just beautiful. I try to evoke nostalgia and beauty in my fabric paintings. A hint of cultural things past. A timeless beauty that can easily delight in the 21st century. Feminine but not too pink, female but without the cleavage. It is a technical challenge to paint lace and silk but the technical aspect is always inferior to the vision I want to portray.
