About the Artist

NB!
I do not update this blog anymore as I have moved it to my website. Please find all info, my blog and my work on my website. thank you.

I am a Dutch artist (pronounce my surname as "Ploog") living in the United Kingdom since the year 2000. I studied Art & Architectural History in The Netherlands for which I gained an MA and Ph.D. After my university years I took up painting full time, now combining it with raising my two young sons.
In my work I explore portraits, figures and fabrics; I relish in portraying the textures of different surfaces and materials, especially lace. My love for art history comes through in my works where the past plays an important role. Antique textiles and references to old masters (17th century) are integrated into my works. I works in oils and pastel and regularly take on portrait commissions. I have exhibited my work at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, The Royal Institute of Oil Painters, The Pastel Society,  the Royal West of England Academy of Art, the BP Portrait Award Exhibition 2013 amongst other places.

some quotes from the press:

"[...]captures the tension between a child's vulnerability and unconfidence on the one hand and her incipient independence and individuality on the other. These elegant, classic pictures draw thoughtfully on art history without being pastiches.”
(Michael Savage, Grumpy Art Historian, blog on ’The Lace Maker’, within BP Portrait Award 2014 Exhibition)

"To my mind it's a bit of a masterclass in how to portray complex fabrics in portraits[...]”
(Katherine Tyrell, Making a Mark blog 2014 on BP Travel Award works)

"Ploeg has beaten the photo realists at their own game. This painterly picture captures surface and texture much better than a camera, but above all it's an arresting portrait."
(Michael Savage, Grumpy Art Historian, blog on Self Portrait with Lace Collar, BP Portrait Award 2013)

"Sophie Ploeg’s Self-Portrait with Lace Collar sensitively describes the delicacy of human skin as her luminous face emerges from a dark interior
(Ben Luke, London Evening Standard, 20 June 2013, on Self Portrait with Lace Collar, BP Portrait Award 2013)
