BP Travel Award

The Lace Trail

In 2013 my Self Portrait with Lace Collar was accepted into the BP Portrait Award exhibition (see here). One of the awards in this exhibition is the Travel Award, which is given out every year in order to allow artists to expand their horizon and work on a portraiture-related project. Every artist selected for the BP Portrait Award is invited to submit a proposal for the Travel Award.

I gratefully received the BP Travel Award for my proposal to research how lace is depicted in early 17th century portraiture in England and The Netherlands. My travel and research inspired me to create a new series of paintings. A selection of the paintings are exhibited within the BP Portrait Award 2014 exhibition which will start in London in June 2014 and tour to Sunderland and Edinburgh thereafter.

Book The Lace Trail
Besides the 10 paintings I created for the BP Travel Award I have also written a book.  It features essays on art history, portraiture in early 17th century, lace history, the making of the paintings and a catalogue section for the paintings.

Prints
The National Portrait Gallery sells beautiful large mounted prints of some of my paintings. Follow this link for more info.

2015 Exhibitions

Happy 2015!! I love looking ahead so I have been looking at any great exhibitions coming up. Not the ones with my work in it - necessarily - but the big ones at the major public galleries. Lots of newspapers do this but just like everybody else I never agree with their selection! In 2014 there were some real blockbuster exhibitions. I don’t always get to go because of time restraints (I have a young family so sometimes Rembrandt has to make way for Paddington Bear) but I really enjoyed the ‘Wedding Dresses’ exhibition at the V&A last year, as well as the major Veronese exhibition at the National Gallery. Of course the BP Portrait Award 2014 was a big one for me personally. I really wanted to see the Rembrandt exhibition but I simply ran out of time and had to skip it. I am no big exhibition-goer, but I am a wannabe. In no particular order I hope to see at least some of these promising exhibitions in 2015. Which ones would you recommend and have I missed? Sargent.
